Room to Read works closely with bilateral and multilateral organizations and governments to improve literacy and gender equality around the world. We use our programmatic and operational expertise to help governments implement successful educational projects at scale. We share materials, conduct workshops, and provide on-site coaching that then helps others to learn the best elements of Room to Read programming. These organizations, in turn, can train others in these methods, too. This helps us to reach many more children than we could do alone. Following are examples of recent work:
Room to Read supported the U.S. Department of Agriculture efforts in Laos, through a McGovern-Dole Food for Education award to Catholic Relief Services, to establish 70 libraries, provide 49,000 books to these libraries, and implement literacy instruction activities in 26 schools.
Room to Read is working with the U.S. Agency for International Development in the Indian states of Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand to implement our literacy program in 100 model schools. The plan is to use these examples to teach state educational officials in how to replicate the model in more than 1,250 more schools themselves. We estimate that more than 136,000 children will benefit from this project.
In Tanzania, we are collaborating with RTI International and the national government, under a contract with the U.S. Agency for International Development, to implement the Tusome Pamoja Project. Our role is to develop new Kiswahili-language teaching and learning materials for children in grades 1 through 4.
Also in partnership with RTI International and the U.S. Agency for International Development, Room to Read is playing a strategic role in the national Early Grade Reading Project in Nepal. Room to Read is leading the technical team and overseeing the development of teaching and learning materials for a project to create the national approach to Nepali early grade reading instruction.
Room to Read and Chemonics International are working with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Rwanda Ministry of Education on a five-year the Soma Umenye project to improve early grade reading in the country. Room to Read’s role is to lead the development of teaching and learning materials as well as teacher in-service professional development for this national early grade reading program.
