Legacy Giving

What Will Your Legacy Be?

Room to Read is creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality and, as a legacy donor, you can make a lasting commitment to help us achieve that goal. With your partnership, we will continue to help children in low-income communities develop literacy skills and a habit of reading and empower girls to build skills to succeed in school and negotiate key life decisions. Your lasting support will provide the life-changing gift of education for generations to come.

Decide what type of gift you would like to leave. A bequest, or gift made through your will, is the most common type of legacy gift.

Bequest – One of the simplest and most effective ways you can ensure that education endures for the world’s most vulnerable children – not just now, but always – is by writing Room to Read into your will.

Bequests can be for a percentage of your estate or a specific dollar amount and your gift may be in the form of cash, stocks, or bonds. Suggested language for making a bequest to Room to Read can be found below:

For a bequest of a percentage of the estate:

“I give, devise and bequeath to Room to Read, a nonprofit corporation of the State of California, tax ID #91-2003533, located at 465 California Street, Suite 1000, San Francisco, California 94104 ___% of my estate for its general purposes.”

For a specific bequest:

“I give, devise and bequeath to Room to Read, a nonprofit corporation of the State of California, tax ID # 91-2003533, located at 465 California Street, Suite 1000, San Francisco, California 94104, the sum of $ for its general purposes.”

Life Insurance Policy – Naming Room to Read as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy is a significant way to impact our work. You can also designate Room to Read as the primary beneficiary for a percentage or specified amount of the policy or name us a contingent beneficiary.

Retirement – Designate Room to Read as a beneficiary of your retirement or pension plan, including your IRA or 401(k).

Charitable IRA Rollover (US only) – Use a charitable IRA rollover and make gifts to Room to Read count toward your minimum distribution requirement while also excluding the transferred amount from your taxable income.
