Life skills education and a life transformed

In a small rural village in Cambodia, inside a simple wooden house resting on bamboo floors, a young girl named Vet Senghong grew up in a world shaped by hardship.

Her mother, a strong and devoted single parent raising four children, sold corn to provide for the family. Their poverty brought whispers, judgment, and pity from those around them. Many believed their fate was fixed, that the family would never rise above its struggles.

But even as a child, Senghong quietly carried a determination to change her story.

Everything began to shift the day she became part of Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program. Surrounded by mentors who believed in her, she began to see a future she had never dared to imagine. Encouragement, life skills education and emotional support helped her build confidence, resilience and a sense of hope she had never known before. It was during these years that she uncovered a talent she didn’t realize she had — the ability to write stories that touched the heart.

While still in school, she published her first book, marking the beginning of a new dream and a new identity as a young writer.

Her commitment to education continued beyond high school. Today, Senghong is a fourth-year university student majoring in Khmer Literature. For her family, this achievement is extraordinary. For Senghong, it is proof that dedication and opportunity can open doors once believed impossible. Education transformed how she viewed herself and gave her the discipline, vision, and courage to pursue a brighter future.

This transformation also led her back to Room to Read, this time not as a student but as a social mobilizer. Taking on the very role that once guided her, she now mentors and supports 121 girls across three classes, using Room to Read’s life skills education content and curriculum. She listens, encourages and stands beside them in moments of struggle — just as someone once did for her. A girl who once needed guidance has now become a source of strength for others, a young leader her community trusts and admires.

This past year was one of the most remarkable in her journey. Senghong published her second book, strengthening her voice as a rising writer. She also earned third place in the national Samdech Hun Sen Short Story Competition, a powerful recognition of her talent, creativity and perseverance.

Today, people in her village see Senghong and her family differently. She says with pride that education changed her life “360 degrees,” and now her siblings study harder because they see what is possible. The girl who once faced judgment has become someone her entire community celebrates. She has changed the future not only for herself, but for her family and for the many girls she mentors.

When she speaks to girls who face challenges like she once did, her message is simple and powerful:

“Education is the path to a brighter future. Don’t give up on yourself. Every problem has a solution.”

This is the lived truth of someone who fought through fear, illness, poverty and doubt, yet refused to stop dreaming.

Senghong hopes to open her own publishing house one day, a place where she can nurture young writers and continue using her voice to inspire others. Her life is a testament to what can happen when a girl is given the chance to learn.

She rises.
She leads.
She helps others rise with her.

And she becomes part of a powerful chain of change stretching far beyond her village.
