A dedicated mentoring team was also established to work closely with the National Book Committee while deepening expertise in Room to Read’s book development approach. In parallel, capacity-building workshops were conducted for authors and illustrators, focusing on best practices in creating engaging, age-appropriate children’s literature. As a key output, the project supported the development of 15 high-quality children’s book titles in Spanish, contributing both to immediate resource availability and to strengthening the broader publishing ecosystem. In 2021, we took our work even further with the World Bank. We versioned 15 of our Spanish Honduras titles (from our previous project with USAID) into two local languages in Honduras with very little existing reading materials for children – Garifuna and Miskito.2021

Room to Read implemented a USAID-funded project focused on strengthening the capacity of authors, illustrators, publishers, and government stakeholders to create high-quality children’s books, while supporting the long-term sustainability of the children’s publishing industry. The project began with a comprehensive gap analysis, drawing on extensive stakeholder consultations to identify key challenges within the local publishing ecosystem and inform program design. Building on these insights, Room to Read supported the establishment of a National Book Committee to guide sector development, including promoting the production and procurement of quality children’s books for schools.
