"Creating Room to Read: A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy", the new memoir by John Wood, Room to Read founder and board co-chair, is being released today. The announcement was made by Wood and his publisher, Viking, an imprint of the Penguin Group. Wood’s inspirational sequel to "Leaving Microsoft to Change the World" (Harper Collins, 2006), "Creating Room to Read" tells the story of what happened when Room to Read began to scale beyond Wood’s wildest dreams. Wood chronicles how the organization tackled next steps— the challenges of balancing business expansion and integrity, raising funds in a difficult economy, and expanding Room to Read’s mission in a quest to provide access to local language children’s books and quality education. "Creating Room to Read" can be found in book stores throughout the U.S. and select international markets, and is also available for download as an e-book.
The next chapter in an ongoing story, "Creating Room to Read" launches with significant acclaim from early reviewers. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook says, “John Wood is building a global movement around literacy and gender equality. 'Creating Room to Read' offers a blueprint for transforming lives…and eventually the world.” Kirkus Reviews describes the book as, “An absorbing personal account of a remarkable achievement”. Booklist asserts, “Wood’s passion for literacy and education infuses every page. An inspiring read on the power of books.”
"Creating Room to Read" addresses the financial, political, environmental, and emotional consequences of global illiteracy and demonstrates how teaching a child to read creates stunning reverberations for families, communities, and all future generations. Weaving together inspirational stories and sobering statistics, "Creating Room to Read" is a catalytic call to action that offers practical, achievable and scalable solutions to remedy this epidemic.
Wood began his international book tour yesterday in Dallas and, in coordination with Viking, plans to visit 14 cities in North America this month to host "Creating Room to Read" events open to the public. Wood will be visiting the Asia Pacific market and additional cities throughout North America from March through May to preside over Room to Read events celebrating the book’s release. "Creating Room to Read" will launch in the UK and Europe this spring. A full listing of events featuring "Creating Room to Read" can be found at www.creatingroomtoread.com.
