Scholastic has been a valued partner of Room to Read since 2001. As Scholastic celebrates their 100th anniversary and Room to Read celebrates our 20th anniversary, we reflect on the amazing work we’ve done together and look forward to many more years of impact.

Since 2001, Scholastic has been an integral partner of Room to Read by donating large quantities of books to our libraries each year. Their global network of offices has creatively and effectively collaborated to provide increasing numbers of Scholastic titles to the eager young readers in Room to Read’s Literacy Program. The first shipment of donated books from Scholastic arrived during Room to Read’s second year of operation. To date, Scholastic has donated more than 1.7 million books!

Carol Sakoian, former VP International, Scholastic (1993-2018) commented on the partnership:

“Scholastic has been proud to provide children’s books for Room to Read’s school libraries in underserved communities in Asia and Africa. What began as a corporate headquarters project has become a global company effort helping Room to Read get books to children who need them most.” Carol Sakoian

Now more than ever, high-quality donated books alongside Room to Read’s own quality reading materials are an integral part of Room to Read’s work as our teams leverage zero and low-tech solutions to reach children learning at home due to COVID-19 school closures.

Dr. Geetha Murali, Room to Read CEO reflected on the impact of the Scholastic partnership:

“Long-term partnerships are critical to systemic change in the communities where Room to Read operates our programs. Scholastic’s in-kind investments in our Literacy Program are an inspired response to the lack of quality reading materials available for children in so many communities around the world. Our transformational partnership has allowed children to develop reading skills, while also discovering the magic and joy of reading” Dr. Geetha Murali

Recently, a shipment of more than 120,000 Scholastic books arrived at Room to Read warehouses in Sri Lanka. Our local team will distribute the books to over 100 Room to Read school libraries and work with government partners to ensure children continue learning during the disruption to education during COVID-19. Room to Read is ensuring education endures for our students through remote learning opportunities and sparking a lifelong love of reading for the young learners in our Literacy Program.

Thank you, Scholastic for your investment in the children, communities and families that Room to Read serves around the world.
