Making room for dreaming and reading

To celebrate International Literacy Day in September, our literacy team in Sri Lanka delivered their successful "Read Books. Dream Big!" campaign for the second year in a row. The campaign had three goals:

1. help instill a habit of reading among children beyond Room to Read schools,

2. provide training to government primary grade teachers on effective literacy instruction and library management and

3. support parents to help their children develop strong reading habits at home. 

The campaign reached more than 5,800 children, more than 160 educators and more than 1,300 parents across the north-central, central and western provinces of Sri Lanka. In the western province, Room to Read collaborated with the Colombo Public Library to conduct a large-scale read-aloud session, engaging an entire community of children, parents and educators in the science and magic of reading.
