With a 10-kilometer daily walk to school growing up, Shrijana faced pressure to abandon her education. Now, she has a master’s degree in sociology and is proudly fulfilling her dream of serving in the Nepal Army, including a peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.
"The audacity to dream and the unwavering encouragement from Room to Read fueled my belief that women are capable of achieving great things," Shrijana said about her time in our Girls’ Education Program. “While my parents were my first and most important guardians, the mentors from Room to Read became equally vital in shaping my life.”
Trang dreamed of lifting her family out of poverty, so she started a YouTube channel to see if she could earn more income. In Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program, Trang learned life skills like critical thinking and decision making that enabled her success. She grew an audience of more than 600,000 subscribers and created financial stability for her family — all while excelling in school and becoming a role model for younger girls.
When girls like Trang learn essential life skills, they inspire hope and create waves of change that extend throughout their families, communities and future generations.
In Hathigamuwa, Sri Lanka, many parents initially opposed a school library, fearing it would distract children from exam preparation. But through trust-building conversations led by Room to Read, the community began to see the power of reading. Parents joined in read-aloud sessions, donated books — even helped decorate library walls. Today, the same children attend the library with enthusiasm, borrowing books and improving their language skills and comprehension along the way. Their journey from skepticism to celebration is a true inspirational story of hope rooted in community collaboration and exemplifies how hope can change mindsets and build brighter futures.
Naifat’s journey is a vibrant addition to inspirational stories of hope. In Tanzania, Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program encouraged Naifat to ask herself: "Who am I — what do I want to be?" No one had asked her that question. "But in asking it," she reflected, "my teacher handed me a key." When Naifat discovered her passion for singing, she took a brave step and performed in her local community, building confidence through life skills and mentorship. Today, shedreams of becoming both a singer and businesswoman, using her ambition and creativity to shape her future. Her story shows that when girls are empowered to discover their talents, they become beacons of possibility, not just for themselves, but for their communities.
Joba loved learning. Science, humanities, government — she was passionate about it all. She wanted to keep learning, past lower secondary school, beyond higher secondary school and into university. When the pandemic forced her school to close, her family suggested it was time for marriage. But with the confidence and perseverance built through her Room to Read life skills education, and the support provided by her Room to Read mentor, Joba stood firm. Marriage would wait. Joba would continue her education and follow her dreams.
