Many world problems can be addressed through one solution: education. Why? Because knowing how to read makes people safer, healthier and more self-sufficient — yet more than 773 million people cannot read – that number is greater than double the U.S. population and two-thirds of these individuals are women and girls. That’s why Room to Read’s innovative model focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools in historically low-income communities during the two most critical time periods in a child’s schooling: early primary school for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’ education.
We collaborate with local governments, schools, communities and families to ensure they understand the importance of literacy and how they can play a role in enabling students to achieve their full potential.
We transform schools into child-friendly learning environments with teaching materials and libraries full of engaging children’s books.
We provide professional training workshops on teaching reading and writing as well as library management and activities. We follow up with on-site coaching to ensure educators can effectively apply their newfound skills and knowledge.
We use the evidence of our impact in schools to advocate with governments to adopt our approach to literacy. We work in partnership with governments to develop and drive reforms in curriculum, teacher training and reading promotion.
