The government of Vietnam has recognized that education is the cornerstone of the country’s prosperity in the face of challenges like these, and that children’s literacy skills and ability to build habits of reading and learning are strong indicators of positive, long-term educational, social and economic outcomes. To achieve optimal education outcomes nationwide, Room to Read has become a trusted partner to Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), with its Literacy and Girls’ Education Programs recognized as the most effective and scalable interventions that improve educational outcomes.
Through these two key programs, Room to Read focuses on the following:
- Literacy: Room to Read equips educators and schools to establish and maintain child-friendly libraries, filled with colorful, local language books developed by local authors and illustrators. Where needed, Room to Read is also developing resources to support learning for marginalized students, such as students from ethnic minorities.
- Girls’ Education and Gender Equality: Room to Read supports secondary school students with mentorship and life skills workshops to help adolescents — especially girls — navigate the many challenges, biases and pressures they face, including the pressure to drop out of school early.
