About Us
Volunteer
Our chapter was founded in 2007, which is made up of committed individuals who believe that World Change Starts with Educated Children. We are part of a global network of changemakers bringing Room to Read to our communities and raising the critical funds we need to make education a reality for millions of children.
Together we will raise more money than we ever could alone and we are so excited for you to come along on our journey to change the world through education.

Why Room to Read?
Room to Read keeps their overhead well below the industry average to maximize the percentage of your contributions that go toward their programs, and they spend their program funds wisely so that missions of children may benefit from their work.
Keeping a girl in school for as long as possible means that her potential marriage is delayed to a more mature age where she can decide for herself. So many girls have been married off at the tender age of 9 or 10, due to poverty and a preference of the family educating the boys over the girls. An educated mother means that more likely her children will be educated as well. This is the only way, and first step into eliminating poverty.
Room to read targets two critical milestones during a child's school years that can dramatically impact a child's life and their future generations. They concentrate on literacy learning during first and second grades because once a child reaches third grade without basic literacy skills, it is extremely difficult for the child to catch up. To us this means a child develops both the skills and habits of reading which they believe together contribute to lifelong learning. They also concentrate efforts during a girl's transition into secondary school in sixth and seventh grades when she has a high risk of dropping out of school because wages for girls increase by 15-25% for each additional year a girl remains in secondary school.
85 cents to every dollar goes to our actual cause with 75% allocated to the Literacy Program and 25% to the Girl's Education Program (GEP). We have been rated 4/4 stars on Charity Navigator, year after year, which puts us in the top 1% of transparent, credible NGO's. Room to Read is run efficiently and methodically like a business, with our CEO, CFO & many of our staff with competitive backgrounds in the private sector and with Masters & PHD. Our founder, John Wood's motto has always been "GSD" (Get Shit Done) and we hold true to that, because each day that we don't educate a girl, is another day we can't take back.
