By Ed Young
A Nepalese basket tells the story of its use through three generations of a family. This is a beautiful picture book for young children.

Non-Fiction

Demi Buddha

This is a beautifully illustrated book addressing Buddhism and their God's.

Close Encounters Of A Third World Kind
By Jennifer J. Stewart
This is a fiction book about an American girl traveling through Nepal.

We Need To Go To School: Voices of Rugmark Children
By Tanya Roberts-Davis
Nepalese children in their own words talk about their early years in poverty stricken villages. They discuss how it felt to work in carpet factories and how they felt when they were given the chance to go to school.

Non-Fiction

Nepal
By Jon Burbank
Describes the geography, history, government, economy, people, religion, language and culture of Nepal. It includes several recipes. This is a very good summary of Nepal.

Fiction

Arresting God in Kathmandu
By Samrat Upadhyay
The first Nepali author writing in English to be published in the West, Upadhyay brings to readers the flavor of Nepal and its culture in this impressive collection of nine short stories. Many of the pieces contain themes centered around the cultural taboos relating to the roles of men and women, love, and fidelity and discuss other issues pertinent to Nepali life such as arranged marriages, the caste system, and the Hindu faith.

The Guru of Love: A Novel

A math teacher and tutor earning a low wage and living in a small apartment with this wife and children, Ramchandra becomes involved in an illicit affair with one of his students, Malati, a beautiful, impoverished young new mother. Discusses many Nepalese social norms and taboos.

This a good book for high school. Discusses the natural history of the Himalay an Mountains through the eyes of a traveler.

A History of Nepal
By John Whelpton
This book is the most comprehensive and accessible English-language one-volume history of Nepal. John Whelpton, who works as a teacher in Hong Kong, is an historian and linguist.

Journey Through Nepal
By Mohamed Amin, Duncan Willets and Brian Tetley
A beautiful book about Nepal's culture decorate with colorful photographs.
