Room to Read welcomes and encourages students who are passionate about transforming the lives of millions of children in the developing world to get involved in our work through internships. These opportunities provide hands on experience with a growing international organization that is focused on literacy and gender equality in education.

Q: Do interns have to be college students?
A: Yes, interns must be currently enrolled students. Volunteer and Career Opportunities are listed on our site for those who are ineligible to apply for internships.
Q: What does a Room to Read internship entail?
A: Room to Read internships are located in either our New York or San Francisco global offices. Interns work alongside a manager who provides direction and oversight for the completion of specific projects and are invited to participate in team meetings, informational interviews, and other relevant opportunities.
Q: When are internships available?
A: Room to Read offers internships as project opportunities arise; however, the majority of our internships are offered in the summer. Internships are generally 10-12 weeks in length. The application process will begin once an opportunity has been posted to our site.
Q: Does Room to Read offer internships in its international locations?
A. No, we do not have internship opportunities in other countries. All opportunities are located in the United States.
Q: What is the application process?
A: Candidates apply to the listed internship opportunities with a resume and cover letter. The materials are reviewed and eligible candidates are contacted for interviews. Unfortunately due to the volume of submissions received, we are unable to reply to all candidates.
Q: How many hours are required for an internship?
A: Internships range from 20-40 hours per week depending on the intern’s availability and the requirements of the department.
Q: Does Room to Read offer student credit or a stipend for internships?
A: Depending on the department, the length of the internship and the requirements for school credit, Room to Read may provide a small stipend or assist students in receiving school credit for hours worked.
Q: Does Room to Read provide temporary relocation for interns?
A: Unfortunately we do not have the resources to provide relocation assistance but we are available to answer questions and provide suggestions.
Q: What projects have Room to Read interns worked on in the past?
A: Room to Read offers internship opportunities across various departments. Past projects have included:
a) Legal Intern: conducted research and finalized a standard MOU (Memoranda of Understanding) that Room to Read now uses around the globe when working with governments and partner organizations.
b) Development Intern: supported the development department in expanding our Youth Engagement Program. Through research and communication with supporters, proposed a strategy for marketing the program and increasing its reach.
c) Program Operations Intern: developed an Education 101 tool that included detailed information on education globally as well as country specific statistics and information.
d) New Country Operations Intern: assisted in the development of the Asia expansion report. Revised expansion strategy/guidelines and assisted with the finalization of a country and legal assessment report.
