One Shared World is a campaign to raise awareness of global poverty and generate dialogue about solutions, such as Room to Read's programs that help children in the developing world receive the lifelong gift of education.

We invite you to join Room to Read and the One Shared World campaign in celebrating International Literacy Day on September 8, 2007 – and to use this as an occasion to begin to learn more, connect more and do more about literacy, a path out of poverty. Here are a few suggestions.

Read more about Room to Read's Founding

The founding of Room to Read is chronicled in John Wood's memoir entitled Leaving Microsoft  About Us - News & Media - Book to Change the World. John vividly tells about Room to Read's beginnings, from his life-altering decision to leave Microsoft, to his quest to create a non-profit with a strong business ethos. Publisher's Weekly described the book as, "an infectiously inspiring read ... the kind of book that business colleagues will discuss with their acquaintances, spouses and friends."

Hold a Book Drive

Room to Read has formed a very successful relationship with an organization called Better World Books, which collects and resells used books to benefit our programs. They are well equipped to handle the logistics and make it incredibly easy for donors to send the books to them by paying for shipping! For more information, please visit their Book Donations page and mention that Room to Read sent you.

If you'd like to organize a book drive for NEW children's books, download our Book Drive Kit.

Attend a Local Event

Our chapters hold regular events to raise awareness and funds for Room to Read. Check out our list of events and make plans to attend one near you!

Give the Gift of Education!

When you educate a girl, you educate the next generation.

Currently, Room to Read has sponsored more than 3,400 girls from underprivileged families in Cambodia, India, Laos, NepalSri Lanka, and Vietnam to attend school through the Girls' Education Program. You can help a young girl go to school by donating today. Every donation helps!

Donation Amounts

  • $25 will provide one girl in the developing world with much-needed school supplies.
  • $250 will fund one year of a girl's education including school fees, uniforms, school supplies, medical care and transportation. Your gift will enable one girl to gain the lifelong gift of education, forever changing her life.
  • $2,500 will fund ten years of girls' scholarships. Long-term sponsors of the Program receive an annual Girls' Education Yearbook that describes the program in detail, highlights partnerships, and profiles some of the scholars.

Please use the secure credit card form below to donate to Room to Read using your Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, or JCB card. Once your donation is complete, you will automatically receive an official US tax receipt via email. We use industry standard security (SSL) to encrypt all donations, so rest assured that your information is safe.

If you are making a gift in honor of one or more friends or relatives, you will have the opportunity to download printable gift cards once your donation is complete.

Please fill in the fields below with information exactly as it appears on your credit card statement, otherwise we may not be able to process your donation.
