Room to Read depends on our chapter leaders and chapter members to help us achieve our annual fundraising goal and to represent Room to Read. Our chapters are comprised of groups of individuals who have made a long-term volunteer commitment to promoting Room to Read within their networks and communities. The chapters organize annual fundraising events, introduce us to potential corporate, foundation and individual supporters and act as representatives for Room to Read within their area.

Meet the

 Chapter Leaders

Amy Powell
Amy Powell is a New York based food and travel writer. She is a graduate of the Hotel School of Administration at Cornell University and the French Culinary Institute. Prior to writing full time, Amy worked extensively in beverage industry serving as a regional sales manager covering United States. Amy was a founding Chapter Member in Los Angeles, serving as Co-Director of Programs.
Cary Jones
Cary Jones has recently relocated to New York from Los Angeles where she was a founding member of the LA Chapter. Having worked in the entertainment industry for the past 12 years, she is now establishing her career roots on the east coast. She is an avid adventure traveler, semi professional wine drinker and an extremely verbose emailer.

We'll preview the new documentary from The New York Times journalist Nick Kristof and his wife Sheryl WuDunn, based on their best-selling book. 

The film features incredible footage of Room to Read’s work in Vietnam along with several moving stories from our Girls' Education Program. We'll be joined by Director/Producer Maro Chermayeff and Room to Read Founder and Board Co-Chair John Wood.

Namaste India Global Yoga Event
is right around the corner! The big day takes place this
Saturday, June 16th at various studios around NYC, and we need your help filling classes! Join
this global effort to raise $37,500 to go towards girls’ annual scholarships for Room to Read’s
Girls’ Education Program!

The NYC Chapter has secured the following studios in Manhattan to host yoga classes at various
times and various levels of donation. So go ahead...attend a class, spread the word to your
network, bring a friend or two, and help Room to Read reach its goal!!!

Trying to stay fit in the New Year? Come run with us!
Introducing the "Are You Ready For Some Football Sunday Funday Runday" 4-Miler!

What: A 4-mile fun run/race in Central Park plus drinking and football watching afterward
When: Sunday, January 22nd at 11am
Where: Meet at the entrance of Central Park on 84th Street and 5th Avenue. Look for people that look like runners.

Prizes: A Growler of beer for the winner! There will also be a special surprise for a lucky participant drawn at random. It could be you!
Suggested Donation: $10

Post-Run Celebration and Game Watch: Jack Russell's, 2nd Avenue between 82nd and 83rd
Race Course: It will be a 4 mile run starting at the entrance to Central Park on 84th Street and 5th Avenue (SW corner, right next to the Met). It will cross the park just south of the 86th Street car Transverse, and continue down the west side of the park, past Tavern on the Green, back across to the east side at the southern end, and loop back up to where we started. Runners will then run out of the park on 84th street until they reach 3rd Avenue, at which point they will run south to 82nd, where they will turn left and finish on 82nd almost at 2nd avenue. Celebratory drinking for the football championship games at Jack Russell's on 2nd Avenue between 82nd and 83rd.

If you don't want to run, you can still come to the bar after. We'd love to see you and watch the game with you!

Bring your friends and learn more about Room to Read and how to become involved in the New York Chapter.  Room to Read is a non-profit whose mission is to create world change through educating children in the developing world.  In just eleven years working in nine countries in Asia and Africa, Room to Read has built over 1,400 schools, distributed over 9.4 million books in native languages, built over 11,000 libraries, and is providing long term scholarships and mentoring for 10,590 girls who otherwise would not have access to an education. The New York City Chapter is a group of enthusiastic volunteers devoted to raising money to support Room to Read’s mission by organizing fun and creative activities.  Come meet JOHN WOOD, founder of Room to Read, and join us for a night of drinks and good people and learn how to get involved.

Volunteer opportunities include helping to plan events, giving small presentations about Room to Read's work, and introducing Room to Read to new supporters!
