About Room to Read Chapters

Room to Read depends on our chapter leaders and chapter members to help us achieve our annual fundraising goal and to represent Room to Read. Our chapters are comprised of groups of individuals who have made a long-term volunteer commitment to promoting Room to Read within their networks and communities. The chapters organize annual fundraising events, introduce us to potential corporate, foundation and individual supporters and act as representatives for Room to Read within their area.

About the
Columbus
 Chapter

Welcome to the Columbus Room to Read Chapter. We are proud to be Room to Read's 54th global chapter. We are currently in process of launch and expect to be fully active and operational by Q3/2011.

We are in need of passionate, committed, high-caliber committee members as well as a dedicated and capable volunteer base. Please get in touch with us with any desires to lend a hand!

Our goals for 2011 are to just get started and build a tight group of committed and active volunteers. Of course we would also like to raise $50,000, allowing the construction of a stand alone school and funding of many dozens of years of girls scholarships. (Updated 05.2011)

We are very excited for our first social gathering.  Beers for Books is a social for all interested volunteers and committee members.  We will be getting to know each other and our passions for Room to Read and its mission.  We will also be doing some light brainstorming in a fun way with several stations where we'll be able to write down ideas throughout the evening and etc.  Don't worry, nothing embarrasing or on-the-spot!

Surly Girl has a nice, big back room that is first-come/first-serve but since it is Monday the 30th, and we will be getting there plenty early, it will be all ours.  Very much looking forward to seeing everybody there!  If you have anyquestions please call me at 614-477-5648 or email me at paulgravesjr@gmail.com.  Again this is happening Monday, May 30 at 6:30PM. See you there!

 About Room to Read
Founded in 2000, Room to Read is based on the belief that education is crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty in the developing world. Since then, the organization has supported over four million children by providing better access to higher-quality educational opportunities. Room to Read has funded the construction of 1,219 schools, established over 12,000 bilingual libraries, distributed nearly 9.0 million books, and at the end of 2010 supported the education of 10,000 primary and secondary school girls.  Room to Read founder John Wood was recently voted to the list of the “Top 25 Givers in the World” by Barron’s.  Room to Read hopes to directly benefit literacy access for 10 million children by 2015.

PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSION, COLUMBUS LIBRARY
April 26, 2011

Thank you everyone for a wonderful evening.  We hope that you left with a good feel for what Room to Read does (it's a lot!) and how they fit into the picture of a more peaceful, united and prosperous planet.   These info sessions will continue to be held once every quarter or so, in order to inform new and prospective volunteers and committee members.  However, we will now move on to more social functions.  Hooray!  Look for our first member mixer and brainstorming party on Monday, May 23rd, 6:30pm at Surly Gurl in the Short North.  More information below...

PRIVATE INFORMATION SESSION, COLUMBUS LIBRARY
January 31, 2011

Our private information session at the library, although hampered by foul weather, went very well.  We thank you all for attending and look forward to seeing you again at our Public Session the first week of April.  After this April meeting things should start to pick up steam.  We are still gearing for a very strong Q3/2011 launch.  Why the wait?  We do not want to start weak.  We would like to shoot for the stars and reach them.  We feel it will take much time to properly coordinate a primo-quality launch event with sponsors, tickets, charity auction, etc.

Please get in touch if you would like to be a part!  We need all the talent we can get our hands on.  Thank you.

-Paul Graves, Jr.
