About Room to Read Chapters

Room to Read depends on our chapter leaders and chapter members to help us achieve our annual fundraising goal and to represent Room to Read. Our chapters are comprised of groups of individuals who have made a long-term volunteer commitment to promoting Room to Read within their networks and communities. The chapters organize annual fundraising events, introduce us to potential corporate, foundation and individual supporters and act as representatives for Room to Read within their area.

About the
Canberra
 Chapter

Welcome to the Canberra chapter of Room to Read! We are one of the newer chapters in Australia and are excited to have Room to Read here in the Nation’s Capital. We held our first awareness-raising event in November 2009 and now have a group of enthusiastic and motivated chapter members keen to get involved and to help Room to Read establish a presence in Canberra.
We are now meeting regularly on the second Tuesday of each month and new faces are always welcome.

We are in the process of planning a series of great events in 2012 and we would love to have your support! Please feel free to contact us at Canberra@roomtoread.org

Past Events

What a BLAST at the Bollywood Bonanza!!!

Canberrans came together to warm up winter at our Bollywood Bonanza - it was hotter than a spicy Vindaloo! We had great food and got to bust some serious Bollywood moves after some helpful pointers from Bollywood Dimensions. Thank you to all who came, your festive mood helped make this night a huge success. Another big thank you to Digress and the ladies from Bollywood Dimensions for your generous contribution.

Another great International Woman's Day Fundraising Event! Thank you to all who attended and a special thank you to our speakers, Dr Ines Atmosukarto, Karen Nicholas and Anna Pino for inspiring us all. And a thank you to the Cyrenes women's choir for another wonderful performance.

Canberra at the Cricket

In December, we held a promotional stall at the India versus the Chairman’s XI cricket match at Manuka Oval. A team of supporters led by Vikram Varma and Alison Brewster staffed a stall for five days, encouraging and cajoling cricket fans to buy raffle tickets to win cricket bats signed by the 2010 Australian men’s and women’s teams plus a range of other prizes. Cricket fans were also challenged to guess the number of ‘cricket balls’ (Jaffas) in a jar (539!). While attendance was a little less than hoped, a good time was had and we raised some funds and goodwill in the Canberra community. On the last day, Vikram (a recognised cricket tragic) was almost beside himself when the great Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid got his whole team to sign a bat to raise funds for Room to Read!

We will be back at the cricket on 3rd February for the one-day Sri Lanka versus the Prime Minister’s XI match - again thanks to Vikram’s charm.
