About Room to Read Chapters

Room to Read depends on our chapter leaders and chapter members to help us achieve our annual fundraising goal and to represent Room to Read. Our chapters are comprised of groups of individuals who have made a long-term volunteer commitment to promoting Room to Read within their networks and communities. The chapters organize annual fundraising events, introduce us to potential corporate, foundation and individual supporters and act as representatives for Room to Read within their area.

Volunteer Opportunities:
As the chapter is run entirely by volunteers we're often looking for people who have the skills, enthusiasm and time to help us grow. Volunteering with the dynamic Austin fundraising chapter can be a very rewarding experience and we pride ourselves on the high calibre of people we have working together.

We have a limited number of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Opportunities range from long-term leadership roles, to short-term event or fundraising roles, to ad hoc things that crop up unexpectedly as the chapter evolves.

If this sounds like you, get in touch! Let us know what your skills, experience and interests are, and how much time you can give us. Email us on to register your interest.

Beers for Books Bingo Night
April 2013
Lucy's Retired Surfer's Bar
A night of bingo and beer helped us donate 667 books!

Ugly Holiday Sweater Beers for Books
December 2012
Lucy's Retired Surfer's Bar
We had a lot of fun with an ugly sweater fashion show, holiday trivia, and dance offs whenever there was a tie. The night helped us donate over 300 books.

Beers for BOOks Halloween
October 2012
Six Lounge
Where else will you find a group of costumed Austinites dressed as their favorite children's book characters? Our annual Halloween B4B was once again an awesome time, with great photo ops.

Bollywood Nights
September 2012
Clay Pit
This year's event was a collaboration with Green Sari, who partners with various Austin nonprofits to raise funds for those in need. They choose Retro Bollywood for the night's theme and helped us hit our goal of funding two libraries and 40 years of girls’ education in India!

Beers for Books Trivia Night
April 2012
Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar
Trivia night was a ton of fun AND knocked our goal out of the park. We made $800 based on trivia donations alone and $300 from the bar and food donations, which means 1,100 new books for kids.

Beers for Books Bingo Night
February 2012
Lavaca Street Bar
Our first event of the year was super successful and a ton of fun! Through bingo ticket sales and dollar-per-beer donations from the host bar, we raised $1,177, which means 1,177 books to kids!

An Evening with John Wood
October 2011
Four Hands Home
Our first ever event with John Wood in Austin has helped our group hit the tipping point. More than doubling our revenues from last year, we raised over $70,000 in one night! Thanks to many generous sponsors, over 40 fabulous silent auction items, and a clever way to track our progress toward building a school and providing girls with scholarships, we more than beat our expectations for the night and year. (This amount may be adjusted as some late donations are still being collected.)

Bollywood Nights
September 2011
Clay Pit
Bollywood Nights keeps getting better and better! This year we had a band, multiple dance performances, henna, a big silent auction, delicious food, and a Bollywood dance lesson for all to round out the night. We raised $4,500, topping our past two years!

Room to Rock
August 2011
Our second annual music showcase gained a prime spot in central downtown on a Friday. We had about 100 attendees, held a raffle for a guitar and received a dollar per beer from the host bar. We raised enough from ticket sales, raffle tickets and the bar tab donation to provide 1,800 books to children!

Celebrate Inspiring Women
May 2011
Thanh Nhi, Vietnamese Restaurant
We had a great turnout to our third annual Mother's Day-themed event. 40 people, which almost reached the capacity of 50! Everyone enjoyed Sherrie's recaps on her trips to visit Girls' Education scholars in India and Vietnam and the night's ticket sales and silent auction proceeds raised enough to send 20 girls to school for a year!

Beers for Books
April 2011
Dolce Vita
Our second Beers for Books at Dolce Vita was another huge success. Thanks to our fabulous raffle item donors and Dolce Vita's percentage of all food and drink purchases, we were able to raise enough to provide 670 books to children in the developing world!

Beers for Books
Halloween 2010
Lavaca Street Bar
Our second Halloween-themed Beers for Books raised $900 through raffle ticket sales and, of course, beer. There were some pretty stellar costumes as well.
