About Room to Read Chapters

Room to Read depends on our chapter leaders and chapter members to help us achieve our annual fundraising goal and to represent Room to Read. Our chapters are comprised of groups of individuals who have made a long-term volunteer commitment to promoting Room to Read within their networks and communities. The chapters organize annual fundraising events, introduce us to potential corporate, foundation and individual supporters and act as representatives for Room to Read within their area.

About the
Atlanta
 Chapter

Welcome to Room to Read in Atlanta! Our passion is fueled by the simple idea that World Change Starts with Educated Children. Although basic, education is profoundly important. In order to make the opportunity of education a reality for more of the world’s children, the Atlanta chapter focuses on raising funds and awareness through a variety of events. See below for our activities and please contact us if you want to get involved or would like to meet other Room to Read supporters in the Atlanta area!

Meet the
Atlanta
 Chapter Leaders

Varuna "Dassa" Dassanayake
Dassa who is originally from Sri Lanka was the fortunate beneficiary of a quality education, which in turn allowed him to explore and to learn about the challenges and opportunities that the world has to offer. He volunteers with Room to Read with the belief that access to education in underserved regions and communities allow the best opportunity for long-term sustainability and development.
.
Ashley Spencer
Ashley's first exposure to the impacts of a developing nation's struggle with literacy was during her several months volunteering at an orphanage in Brazil. Her experience at the orphanage, along with the belief that an education can empower a child to reach their full potential, are two guiding factors for her involvement with Room to Read.

"Bigger than Carnegie, Faster than Starbucks: Room to Read's Scalable and Sustainable Model for Educating the World's Children"

By John Wood, Founder and Board Chair, Room to Read

May 2010

Thank you to all who joined us at Room to Read's Evening of Awareness at The Lovett School! Members of the Volunteer Atlanta Chapter worked alongside The Lovett Community to create a special evening, and we hope that everyone was inspired by John Wood's story and vision for Room to Read. As Room to Read celebrates its 10th year, John Wood has proven that Room to Read can be "bigger than Carnegie and grow faster than Starbucks!"

The evening was truly a great success! We want to thank everyone for their generous support of the important work that Room to Read is doing. Due to very generous contributions, we were able to raise $122,531, an all-time high for the Atlanta Chapter and community. This will allow us to build two schools and provide 50,000 books to children throughout the developing world! Thank you for such tremendous support! And, thank you to The Lovett School and Community and  our sponsors: Gas South, The Republic of Tea, and Not A Crumb! Exquisite Cakes.

Room to Read! Wine and Cheese Fundraiser

November 2009

Thank you to everyone who attended our fundraiser at Aqua! We raised over $1,500! It was so exciting to see the energy in the room and meet such fantastic people! Your support is greatly appreciated! We hope you enjoyed learning more about Room to Read, the Girls' Education Program and enjoyed meeting and talking with Emily Leys! Also, thank you to everyone who attended Emily’s talk at Georgia Tech's IMPACT speaker series earlier the same day!  The series provides Georgia Tech students, alumni and the Atlanta business community an opportunity to network and learn from successful entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and notable business and non-profit leaders.  We were so happy that Emily was able to raise awareness of Room to Read, and especially the Girls’ Education Program, with so many in Atlanta!

Other Events: We have promoted Room to Read at the Westminster Alternative Gift Fair, Decatur Book Festival, Asian Cultural Experience at the Botanical Garden, AAYA Volunteer Day, Jingle Jog, Fox Theatre, Cobb-Marietta Retired Educators Association (C-MREA) and Home Depot book drive. The Atlanta chapter helped establish a partnership with JETAA, who chose Room to Read as its international charity.
